As expected by industry experts, many New York and New Jersey pest control professionals are reporting a rise in complaints of bed bug infestations this summer season. Vacation travels are likely contributing to the rise in complaints as bed bugs infestations are rampant in hotels, motels, trains, planes, resorts, cruise ships, and taxis, etc. Even with the most careful inspection while you travel, you could still bring blood sucking bed bugs home with you.
Benzinga.com reported on July 14, 2011, that a New York City pest control company is not only seeing a rise in bed bug infestation calls this summer, they are also surprised to see a rise in complaints of another bloodsucking pest that is bothering residents in the region. According to their report, residents in New York City and Long Island are encountering ticks in record numbers. There are five types of ticks that are common to the New York area, and four have made their presence known to residents. The Brown Dog Tick, American Dog Tick, Blacklegged/Deer tick, and Lone Star Ticks are showing up in record numbers.

Lawns, tall grass, shrubs, wooded areas, and leaf litter are places where ticks can be found. These bloodsucking creatures not only rely on their host for a meal, but also for transport from location to location. Most experts believe that bed bug bites do not carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans, but that is not the case when it comes to tick bites. Besides the “ick” factor of being on the dinner menu of a bloodsucking insect, ticks pose a threat to the health and well-being of both humans and pets.
