It’s that time of year once again. With eager anticipation college students have made their jaunt back home after being away for many months. In their delight to see their son or daughter return to the nest, New Jersey pest control experts want to remind parents to keep on the lookout for more than just dirty laundry when their college student comes home for the holidays. Many students will unwittingly be bringing home an uninvited guest along for the ride that will cause quite a stir once it’s discovered!
Bed bugs have been a continued problem at many college campuses, dorm rooms, and off-site college apartment facilities this school year. Because of their ability to hitchhike, bed bugs can easily travel home with your college student in any of their belongings.
New Jersey pest control professionals recommend that you immediately wash all clothing or bedding, both clean and dirty, that arrives home with your college student. Items should be washed in hot water and dried on the hottest temperature setting in order to kill any potential hitchhiking bed bugs or their eggs. You should also carefully inspect each item that has returned home with your child. In books, look for bed bugs (live or dead), shed skins, blood smears, or fecal matter in between the pages and at the book binding area. Anything questionable should be placed in a plastic bag and put in the freezer if it cannot endure the dryer cycle. Electronics should not go in the freezer. Luggage should be carefully checked and vacuumed on the interior and exterior. All work should be completed outdoors or in the garage in order to keep your home safe from potential bed bugs.
