New Jersey Bed Bug Infestations Smell Like What? Part I Of II

NJ pest control experts report that bed bug infested rooms can exude an obnoxious, sweet, and nauseating smell that can be hard to miss when they are heavily infested.  The aroma that is emitted from bed bugs has been described as smelling like: moldy shoes, raspberries, dirty socks, rotting raspberries, old granola bars, almonds or nuts, or an old musty scent.  Some people have also reported smelling scents such as coriander, cilantro, and citronella, which researchers now believe are the results of alarm pheromones that are released by bed bugs.

The sickly sweet aroma that is described with NJ bed bug infestations, and those found in other parts of the United States, are usually reported in severe infestation cases.  At times people will notice the scent of bed bugs when they squish a captured bed bug or when bed bugs are smashed on their sheets after their nighttime feeding ritual.  Other times, people may notice the scent while lying down on a bed bug infested couch.  In most cases, unless you have a highly sensitive sense of smell, you will not smell the scent emitted by bed bugs during the early stages of a bed bug infestation.

New Jersey pest control experts are often asked if there is a particular scent that bed bugs have an aversion to.  Applying lotion, cream, and perfume will make you smell lovely, but won’t keep bed bugs from biting.  Bug spray repellent will keep the ticks and mosquitos away, but there is no insect spray that you can apply to your skin that will repel bed bugs.  If bed bugs are hungry and you happen to be available, then you may as well ring the bed bug dinner bell!  Recently, apartment dwellers that were desperate to escape their nightly bed bug attacks were found by the rescue workers smothered in gasoline!  Parents, kids, and their beds were found doused with the toxic and flammable liquid which caused the apartment to be evacuated.  The only safe way of ridding yourself of a bed bug infestation is to call a pest control professional.
