The warmer temperatures have arrived and spring break travelers are setting off for travel destinations near and far. After decades of being out of the lime-light, New Jersey pest control experts warn that creepy crawly bed bugs have made a comeback in cities throughout the United States. The resurgence of bloodsucking bed bugs should put all American’s on high alert as they can be found in any place that humans frequent.
NJ pest control professionals say that you can avoid the pesky critters that bite in the night if you take special precautions before, during, and after you travel.
• Packing Tip: Bed bugs have a difficult time climbing on slick surfaces. To avoid having bed bugs gain access into your luggage, it is now recommended that you use hard-shelled luggage instead of soft-sided luggage. If you do not have a hard-shelled luggage piece, consider placing you entire zipped shut luggage in a large sealed trash bag when it is not in use at your travel destination. When packing, place all of your belongings in sealable plastic bags. Be sure to close all plastic bags and your luggage when you are traveling to make certain that no hitchhiking bed bugs gain access.
• Inspect Your Travel Destination: Bed bugs can be found in hotels, motels, cruise ships, resorts, and even at a relative’s home. Inspect for a bed bug infestation by looking for blood smears, fecal matter, shedded skins, and live or dead bed bugs. Evidence of bed bugs can be found in the bed, dressers, nightstand, lamps, curtains, headboard, bed frame, dresser, mirror, upholstered furniture, behind floorboards, and even behind peeling wallpaper. Bed bugs are the size of an apple seed when full grown. Electronics are not off limits to bed bugs. Look for them in clock radios, IPod docking stations, televisions, and VCR’s too.
