Tis The Season To Be Jolly…And Pest Free Part 1 Of 2

The plans are all set.  Thanksgiving is quickly approaching.  Before you know it, travelers from near and far will be hitting the roads, trains, buses, and skies for the busiest travel season of the year.  Celebrating the season is super fun this time of year, but New Jersey pest control professionals want to remind all homeowners that “the most wonderful time of the year” can be spoiled by certain bothersome home invading pests.

Here are a few helpful tips to keep pests from invading your home this winter:

In New Jersey, fireplaces keep us warm and comfy throughout the wintertime.  The bad news is that many pests love the outdoor firewood pile too.  Termites find the firewood pile to be a tasty treat and carpenter ants use the wood to build their galleries.  Storing your firewood off the ground by using poles or concrete blocks will help keep hungry pests away.   Always store your firewood at least 20 feet away from your home so that destructive pests do not find your home a tasty treat as well.

Unpacking the holiday decorations is a yearly tradition which brings back nice memories of years past.  Remembering Aunt Martha’s special ornament that you had since childhood, or sweet decorations that your children made for you at school are things you anticipate finding once you open up those special boxes that you’ve had tucked away all year.  Homeowners are often surprised to find more than holiday decorations inside of their storage containers.  Keep on the lookout while you unpack for pests that devour organic materials such as paper or fabric.  Moths, carpet beetles and silver fish like to settle in storage boxes so that they can nibble away and live undisturbed.

Please check back on Wednesday for the conclusion.
