Beware…Colleges Can Be Ripe With Bed Bug Infestations Part I Of II

New Jersey pest control experts report that bed bug infestations tend to run rampant at many colleges and universities within the United States.  These nocturnal nibblers have been found in college dorm rooms, classrooms, laboratories, as well as student lounge centers.  Despite the wide-spread information that has been published and also handed out to new students, it is not uncommon for bed bugs to be lurking in cracks or crevices.  Colleges provide an ample breeding ground for bed bug activity.

New Jersey pest control experts want to remind parents of college bound students about the possibility of encountering bed bugs in their dorms and apartments when they return to school in the next couple of weeks.  Bed bugs do not die off over the summer months due to the lack of food sources.  Bed bugs can and will wait for a blood meal for up to 18 months if necessary.  College students are especially vulnerable because not only could their new abode be infested with last year’s bloodsuckers, new college students arriving from near and far are great sources for bed bug harborages and transfers.  Any new college student should carefully examine their new living quarters and purchase a bed bug bite-proof mattress encasement so that the bloodsuckers cannot set up house in the mattress or box spring.

The Kentucky Kernel reported on July, 20, 2011 that a University of Kentucky student alerted officials that he found bed bugs crawling on him after sitting on a piece of upholstered furniture in a lounge.  The student’s previous entomology course of study came in handy as he was able to quickly identify the blood thirsty pests and request that immediate attention be given to the matter.  Upon further inspection, bed bugs were found it yet another location in the building.  A pest control expert was called and the areas were quickly isolated to limit the possibility of bed bugs being transferred to other locations in the school.  The University has decided to undergo heat treatment services to eradicate the bed bugs.
