Pavement Ants Are Small But Pack A Wallop!

There is a wide variety of nuisance ants that exist throughout the United States.  Some types of ants prefer to live outdoors, others live outdoors and  will move indoors as they forage for food, and some types of ant colonies can only survive by living indoors.

Pavement ants are considered to be a nuisance ant.  They are one of the most common ant species that you will find throughout the United States.  These ants are active year round and can often be found trailing along the edges of pavements, along the curb, and in the cracks in the pavement.  Always on the hunt for a good source of food and water, pavement ants are often a problem for home and business owners during the winter months, but these pesky ants will not hesitate to invade a structure throughout the entire year.

Pavement ant colonies can have many queens which allow their colonies to become  quite large.  The typical colony ranges in size from 2,000 to 5,000 ants, but a colony has been known to be as large as 30,000 ants.  You know that you have pavement ants when soil is pushed up forming mounds of sand like soil. Different colonies do not tend to get along with each other so it is not  uncommon for colonies to go head to head against each other, fighting until one ant or the other is dead.

Some people are under the misconception that fire ants are the only ants that will give a painful sting.  If you disturb a pavement ant colony, the little ants will fight back by biting and stinging their offender!  Tough skinned people may withstand the attack without a problem, but soft skinned people will likely suffer the aftermath of the attack which feels like the skin is on fire!
