Beware Of The Brown Recluse Spider In New Jersey Part 2 Of 2

Continuing from Monday…

The Brown Recluse is about 9 millimeters in length.  It has a violin-shaped marking that extends from the neck to the abdomen.  This spider has fine hairs on it legs.  The most interesting feature of the Brown Recluse Spider is their eyes.  Unlike most spiders which have eight eyes, the Brown Recluse Spider has only six eyes.  The eyes are arranged in pairs, two on each side and a set in the middle of the face.

Brown Recluse Spiders prefer to live in dry, undisturbed areas.  Wood piles, storage areas, gaps under rocks, in the bark of dead trees, and in logs provide suitable living environments for the Brown Recluse.  Within a structure, these solitary spiders will hide in storage areas or boxes that are not frequented, in attics, behind walls, behind boards, or any place that will keep them warm, dry, and out of harms way.

The bite from a Brown Recluse Spider often results in a stinging sensation that is not always initially painful.  The venom of the spider has a necrotic property which causes the area where the venom is injected to slowly become destroyed.  People who have been bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider often see a small blister like sore appear at the bite site.  In a short period of time, the blister will grow and the body will experience different reactions depending on the individual.  The damage to the body depends on the amount of venom that is injected into the victim.  People who have been bitten by this spider often experience fever, chills, fatigue, joint pain, rash, nausea, bloody urine, jaundice, and sometimes even convulsions and death.  Bites from the Brown Recluse are very slow to heal.  Depending on the size of the wound, it could take anywhere from eight weeks to a year for a bite wound to heal!
