Bed Bugs Worry NJ Travelers Part I Of III

If you are new or seasoned traveler, you should be worried about encountering bed bugs no matter your travel destination.  According to a nationwide poll conducted this year of pest control professionals, bed bug infestations have now been found in all 50 states.  The bulk of the nasty nibblers have been found in apartments and single family homes, with hotels and motels bringing up a close second for confirmed bed bug infestations.

When you are traveling for business or pleasure, before plopping down on that comfy looking bed or hotel lounge chair, it’s extremely important that you examine your room for the telltale signs of a bed bug infestation.  After all, spending the time examining the room for bed bugs takes far less effort than going through the extreme work and emotional distress that you will encounter if you bring the buggers back to New Jersey with you!

Despite their name, bed bugs can be found hiding in many different locations in a hotel or motel.  Some people choose to check The Bed Bug Registry prior to booking their hotel or motel stay.  This online information portal provides travelers with valuable information about a hotel’s past and present bed bug infestation issues which enables travelers the best opportunity to make an informed decision about staying in a particular hotel.  If you happen to encounter bed bugs yourself, you may also enter information onto the registry so that other travelers are warned of the investation.

Here are some simple steps to follow to help you find bed bugs in a hotel or motel.  It’s a good idea to have a flashlight ready to help with your room examination!

In higher end hotels, the concierge may think that you have gone off your rocker, but when your luggage is brought to your room, have concierge place it in the bathtub.  Bed bugs cannot climb into or out of the slick surface of the bathtub, so your luggage will be safe while you proceed with your examination of the room.  If you do not want to use the bathtub, you should only place your suitcase on the luggage rack. Never place it on the bed or the floor as bed bugs can easily climb inside and hide in the tiny folds of the suitcase.
