Three Things We Bet You Didn’t Know About Ants in New Jersey

Ant Control
Ant Control

Every homeowner knows that ants can be merely a nuisance crawling around on surfaces or a costly horror swarming areas or tunneling through wood structures. While some ants move through a house and/or its surrounding landscape without any intention of sticking around long, many stay set up colonies near living areas where they can easily find food, such as near kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms and trash cans.

Ant Colony Facts

Understanding ant colonies is the first step in controlling ant activities and preventing property damage:

1. As noted by the Rutgers Cooperative Research & Extension, New Jersey is home to far more than one or two species of ants that might require you to hire pest control services. The region hosts up to more than twelve species that prefer setting up colonies near homes, businesses and outbuildings.

2. Some species create colonies made up of millions of ants. Yes. You read that correctly. A single colony in your home could have millions of ants in it.

3. All colonies contain ants in various stages of development and some insecticides fail to work on ants that are still in their eggs. As a result, insecticides might need to be used several times before the existing ants die out completely.
