Avoid DIY Bed Bug Remedies

Since the resurgence of bed bugs in the United States, many people have tried a variety of do-it-yourself home remedies to kill the bloodsucking pests report Monmouth County NJ exterminators.  The Washington Post Health and Science reported on November 25, 2013 entomologists have given “low grades to several homespun methods of bed bug defense” methods.

As reported here previously, out of desperation some homeowners have used rubbing alcohol as a means of killing bed bugs.  Rubbing alcohol is highly flammable and toxic when used in high dosages.  Reports from entomologists from Rutgers University at this month’s Entomology 2013 conference revealed that spraying a group of bed bugs with rubbing alcohol in a laboratory setting only left about half of the pests dead.

Another means of control that homeowners have tried to kill bed bugs is using mothballs.  Reports from the team at Rutgers University revealed that eggs and nymphs survived the mothball treatment, but 44 to 60 percent of adult males died when being subjected to the toxic mothballs.

Studies were also completed on ultrasonic bed bug repelling devices, which debunked the theory that they are able to repel any bed bugs from any area.  Researchers used dry ice on hard to treat items as well.  This process worked, but could prove a dangerous means of control for consumers.

Entomologists agree that do-it-yourself home remedies do not typically work for the control of bed bug infestations.  Home and businesses owners are wise to keep a watchful eye out for the pests and call an experienced Monmouth County NJ exterminator for proper eradication of bed bug infestations.
