Camel Back Crickets

New Jersey pest control experts find that some people are fascinated by the camel cricket and others are quite horrified by their existence in their basement.  Camel back crickets, otherwise known as cave crickets, are considered a nuisance pest.  They prefer to live outdoors, but will enter any structure searching for the perfect cave-like environment to call home.  Dark and damp areas will suit this interesting creature well.

Camel back crickets belong to the family of crickets and the sub-family of wingless long-horned grasshoppers, so technically, they are not true crickets like the house cricket or field cricket is.

Camel back crickets are the color of a camel and have a humped back appearance of a camel.  Their long spindly legs are extremely delicate and they are without wings.  These interesting crickets won’t keep you awake all night with their songbird ways like the field and house crickets will.  They feed off of all types of organic material.

Camel back crickets do not bite, sting, or stink, so they are not so bad to have around your home in that regards.  They do however multiply very quickly and grow quite large in size.  Oddly enough, many people who encounter these strange crickets report that they actually jump toward humans instead of away from them, which is why they are often so feared.  Their ability to jump so well is likely what threatens other pests and animals from eating these critters.

New Jersey pest control experts recommend that you seal up all cracks and crevices if you have a camel back cricket infestation in your home.  Because they are attracted to cool dark damp spaces, you should keep your basement as dry as possible.  If these long-range jumpers tend to creep you out, you should call a licensed New Jersey pest control expert which will provide treatment to the inside and outside of your home.
