Mosquitos…A Summer Pest To Avoid

New Jersey pest control experts are reporting a high number of calls for outdoor pests this summertime season.  The hot humid temperatures bring all sorts of pests out searching for food and water sources.

Mosquitos continue to be a particular concern for New Jersey pest control experts and residents alike as these bloodsucking creatures are known for packing a powerful punch as a disease carrying pest.  Mosquito bites can sometimes transmit dangerous diseases to humans such as West Nile Virus, Saint Louis encephalitis, and dengue fever.

The symptoms of these diseases are:

• West Nile Virus: Most people experience mild symptoms that include a low fever, headache, and body aches which will resolve within a few days.  In severe cases, permanent muscle damage, weakness, brain damage or even death can occur.

• Saint Louis encephalitis: Most people do not suffer any illness when infected, but some will develop a headache, fever, nausea, or vomiting. In severe cases, swelling of the brain can occur and in some instances, death can occur.

• Dengue fever:  People affected with dengue fever will experience a high fever that can last for several days.

Mosquitos are most active at dawn and dusk.  Once bitten by a mosquito, the bites will often occur immediately, but can take as long as two days to appear.  Most mosquito bites will resolve themselves within a few days without the need for medical treatment.  Over-the-counter topical creams that contain low levels of cortisone will help with the itching, burning and swelling. For severe reactions to mosquito bites, or any other type of bug bite, you should seek medical treatment.
