Crazy Rat Story

New Jersey pest control experts say that rats are a troublesome pest in NJ as well as most every other parts of the United States.  Rats can live up to eighteen months, but many die before they are a year old.  Being scavengers, rats will eat a wide variety of food substances, but they prefer cereal grains, meats, fish, nuts, fruits, pet food, slugs, snails, and rotting food.  They have a keen sense of taste, touch, sound, and memory which helps to direct them to their meal sources.  Rats are able to detect certain substances, including rat poisons, even after just a tiny taste of it.

New Jersey pest control experts report that like mice, rats are able to squeeze into spaces that are much smaller than the girth of their body.  Gaps the size of a quarter provides ample room for the nimble body of the rat to squeeze into.  Rats won’t hesitate to find their way into any type of structure and if it suits their fancy…even a vehicle!

Just recently, a police officer in Baltimore learned how brazen the menacing scavenger can be.  While driving the patrol car in route to a robbery call, a stowaway rat climbed up the sergeants back.  The officer felt a tickle on his neck so he instinctively swiped it with his arm.  The miffed rat took a bite on the officer’s thumb and palm and a struggle ensued.  Eventually, the officer was able to roll down his window and toss the rat out onto the bridge they were traveling on.  Bleeding from the rat attack, the officer drove to the nearest hospital where they were quickly told that the rat must be found so that it could be tested for rabies.

The officers returned to the bridge and found a limping rat.  Another struggle ensued.  Reports are that the rat was taken down by an umbrella, bagged, and returned to the hospital for testing.
