The Stink Bugs Are Coming, The Stink Bugs Are Coming…Oh My! Part II Of II

Continuing from Friday…

The brown marmorated stink bug is not native to the United States.  They were accidentally introduced to the US in Allentown, Pennsylvania in the 1990’s and first collected in 1998.  These shield shaped bugs originate from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan and are slowing migrating across the United States.  There are currently reports of stink bugs causing serious agricultural problems for farmers in many states.  Stink bugs feed on a wide variety of agricultural plants such as peaches, apples, tomatoes, corn, figs, citrus fruits, soybeans, beans for human consumption, as well as ornamental plants.

The best thing you can do if you find the occasional stink bug basking in the sunshine on the walls of the interior of your home is to slowly approach it with a tissue and lightly grab it.  Make certain that you do not add to much pressure to the tissue or the stink bug, lest you suffer the blast of their terrible skunk like stench that will linger for a good deal of time in your home.  Once gently captured, don’t release the stink bug outdoors as it will likely migrate back inside.  Instead send the stinky pest for a trip through the sewage system!

Once springtime is in full gear, NJ pest control experts warn that stink bugs will be out in full force ready to face the world (and eat your delicious vegetation) once again.  Despite the fact that these bugs are considered just a nuisance pest for homeowners, NJ stink bugs and stink bugs throughout the United States; are a serious agricultural pest that need eradication by a licensed pest control professional.

Because stink bugs are difficult to kill and have no natural predator in the United States, it’s important for every homeowner and business owner to take the threat of stink bugs seriously before they become even more of a pest than they already are.  Hiring a New Jersey pest control expert to provide regular pest control treatments to your property will help keep the stink bug populations down and under control around your home or business.
