NJ Bed Bugs Are Bad For Business

In the not so distant past, bed bugs were almost eradicated from households in the United States.  Experts believe that with the ease of international travel and the lack of potent pesticides available in the United States, bed bugs have enjoyed their resurgence.  Add in the fact that many people are not educated on how to avoid bed bugs, and that it is estimated that only 50% of the population suffer an allergic reaction to their bites, and you can see how bed bug infestations have been able to grow.

Despite their name, bed bugs are not limited to being found only in bedrooms, hotels and motels any longer.  Because they are master hitchhikers, they can now be found anyplace that you find people.  In 2010 they have been reported in movie theaters, airports, retail stores, hospitals, and schools as well.  According to a survey that was conducted by the National Pest Management Association, pest control experts across the United States are reporting that about 20% of the bed bug treatments that they are providing customers are for those in commercial office buildings.

Bed bugs are typically nocturnal and prefer to obtain their blood meal at night.  When they infest a commercial establishment however; they will not hesitate to adjust their schedule to meet their blood thirst needs, which then makes all employees a target for the bugs.

For many people, having bed bugs in their home causes embarrassment, anxiety, and stress.  When bed bugs infestations happen at the workplace, it brings about corporate stigma issues as well.  Employers would be wise to have a bed bug policy in place before they face an infestation to help avoid potential employee bed bug related lawsuits.   A company should never try to treat a bed bug infestation on their own as over the counter remedies do not work well and will not protect their employees. Hiring a licensed pest control specialist who knows how to handle bed bug infestation is a must!
