Cockroaches In New Jersey

Cockroaches are the most common, and one of the most feared insects, that can infest homes in New Jersey and across the United States.  There are approximately 4,500 species of cockroaches worldwide, but only a few are considered to be household pests. 

Most people find cockroaches to be repulsive housemates.  They are known to transmit diseases such as salmonella as they scurry around and in unprotected food items.  Cockroaches have also proven to be very dangerous to people who suffer from asthma or have allergies.  Children and the elderly are particularly at risk of becoming ill when there is a cockroach infestation.

The American cockroach, also known as the palmetto bug or water bug, runs quickly and will dart out of site when you enter the room.  Despite its large size, it can squeeze into very small cracks and crevices. It has over 2000 individual lenses in its eyes so it can see you coming from all angles.

The German cockroach has wings, but cannot sustain flight.  This type of cockroach is the most common type of roach found in the world.  They tend to live where humans are as we provide them with what they crave…food, water and shelter.  These roaches will emit a stinky smell when frightened.

The Oriental cockroach is also known as a water bug. They prefer dark and moist environments like sewers, drains, damp basements, crawl spaces and porches.  Not liking the cold weather, these roaches will eventually try to find a way inside.

Unlike other types of insects that die off over the winter months, cockroaches are prevalent in New Jersey homes and businesses year-round.  They can easily live up to three months without a food source and for up to a month without water.
