What Termite Signs to Watch For When You Garden

Termite Swarmers

The best place to find termites is when you’re outside in your yard or garden. This is where you are in the termites’ element and if you have a garden that is adjacent to your home, it’s even better.

What Attracts Termites

Mulch piles next to the foundation, wooden trellises with vines that connect to siding, trees and bushes that touch your home, and stacks of firewood nearby, among others, can lead termites to find a way into your home. The placement of these things is critical for termites to get inside, so when you are out in the garden, here’s what to look for.

Termite Signs

The most important sign is mud tubes leading up from the ground and into a crack or a hole. Another sign is winged swarmers during the spring as the temperature rises. These flying termites look like flying ants, but their antennae are straight and they have thick waists as opposed to an ant’s thin waist. If you see swarmers in your home or notice them directly leaving a hole or crack in your foundation, you have a termite problem and a NJ pest control specialist should be called in.
