One of the first places ants go once they are above ground is into warm, dry areas like a home, garage or basement. To prevent them from entering your home seal any gaps, cracks and holes found around the following areas:
- Doors
- Windows
- Foundation
- Crawl spaces
- Pipes and water lines
Additionally, hire a professional to locate and destroy outdoor nests so displaced ants don’t rebuild their colonies right beside your home in landscaped areas, under construction materials and in other spots.
What else can you do?
Ants are attracted to food sources. Following these tips can also help prevent their spread in your home:
- Never leave trash bags sit on the ground or a patio as food in bags will attract ants once their regular food sources have washed away. Put trash bags in an outdoor trash can that has a well-fitted lid.
- Never leave food, including crumbs, or dirty dishes sitting out on counters.
