The Low-Down on Spring Ants in New Jersey – Here They Come!

Ant Swarms
Spring Brings Ants

While spring brings warmer weather and sunshine, it can also herald the arrival of unwanted guests. Sugar ants typically make their presence known to homeowners in New Jersey during this time of year when they emerge from their indoor nests and go searching for sweet foods.

What Are Sugar Ants?

Sugar ants, also called pharaoh ants, are tiny pests that range in color from golden yellow to red. Since they only grow to be roughly 1/16th of an inch in size, they’re able to easily get through the smallest of cracks in order to get in and out of walls and other areas where they nest. Sugar ants can build large colonies in several areas of a home, including light fixtures, cabinets, walls, appliances and furniture. They prefer to nest in a warm area that gives them convenient access to food and water.

Are They Dangerous?

Sugar ants don’t bite or sting like some other ant species do, but they can carry a number of harmful bacteria and other germs, including Salmonella and Staphylococcus. Since these germs can be highly dangerous to humans, it’s crucial to have these pests removed from your home as soon as possible.
