Both definitions accurately describe the living, feeding, and breeding areas of a subterranean termite to a tee!

Existing for millions of years, the eastern subterranean termite is considered to be the insect that  causes the most economic damage within the United States report Ocean County, NJ Pest Control professionals.  Subterranean termites live in the soil in colonies that can number into the millions.  These termites can now be found in every state except for Alaska.

NJ termites require a high amount of moisture to survive.  In an effort to stay hydrated, subterranean termites will build mud tubes that lead from their protected underground space to other areas as they forage for food.  Using wood debris, and soil, mud tubes are created and serve as bridges from the main colony to areas where wood is consumed.  The mud tubes also protect the colony from predators and conserve moisture in the colony.

NJ termite infestations within a structure can go undetected for years because the insects destroy the wood from the inside out.  The honeycombed wood that is created by termites is easily distinguishable once it is discovered.

Most people do not recognize the signs of having a subterranean termite invasion.  An Ocean County, NJ Pest Control professional will be able to identify the pests and provide the best treatment plan for full eradication of NJ termites.
