Bottle Flies Can Contaminate Your New Jersey Home Or Business

Nothing can be more annoying than the extreme buzzing at the window.  You might think it’s a panicked bee trying to make its escape, but upon further inspection, you are more likely to find that a bottle fly has been trapped in your New Jersey house.

Bottle flies are large common flies that are easily identified by their colorful exterior…metallic blue or green.  Bottle flies are scavengers.  They deposit their eggs in decaying animal carcasses, garbage, meat, and even fecal matter.  Depending on the temperature, bottle fly eggs will hatch in as little as ten days or as long as 21 days.

When you have one or two bottle flies in your home or business, it is likely that you do not have an infestation on your hands.  Those unfortunate souls likely happened to find their way into your home and became trapped.  Small numbers of bottle flies point to an outside source, but you should inspect for dead animals, and clean out garbage containers to keep bottle fly numbers down.

If you find a large number of bottle flies inside of your home or business, there is a good chance that you have a major infestation on your hands.  Since bottle flies lay their eggs in dead animal tissue, you need to check for dead rodents or birds inside your home.  These animals could have perished inside of wall voids, under heavy appliances, in attics, crawl spaces, in cabinets or other places that are not easily accessible by humans.

Because all bottle flies have originated from eggs laid in contaminated organic matter, they are considered unsanitary.  They can present a health hazard to humans because pathogens adhere to their legs and bodies which can then be spread to human food and food preparation areas as the flies travel from place to place.
