Watch Out for Mice-borne Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis This Winter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Having mice in your home doesn\u2019t just put your food at risk of contamination. Mice have been known to spread a potentially serious illness called lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV).<\/p>\n

What Is LCMV?<\/strong><\/p>\n

LCMV, also known as mouse meningitis<\/a>, is a rodent-borne virus that can spread from mice to humans in several different ways. You can catch this illness when you\u2019re exposed to mouse droppings or fresh urine, as well as mouse saliva or nesting materials. Mice can also pass this virus on to humans through their bites.<\/p>\n

According to the CDC, roughly 5 percent of house mice carry this virus. Early symptoms of the illness, which typically has to run its course, include fever, loss of appetite, headache, vomiting and nausea. Serious complications include meningitis, encephalitis and meningoencephalitis, all of which are potentially life-threatening.<\/p>\n

Preventing LCMV<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can lower your risk of getting LCMV by keeping mice<\/a> out of your home. Seal up entries that they can use to get inside, such as cracks or gaps in walls, and around doors and windows. Fixing leaky pipes and removing sources of food will also help.<\/p>\n
