One of the ways in which termites keep these colonies so well-organized is through the use of pheromones.<\/p>\n

The king and queen of each termite colony emit chemicals called pheromones<\/a>, which help determine how the colony is set up. These pheromones control the number of larvae that turn into workers, soldiers, and winged termites called alates.<\/p>\n

Workers help build and expand the colony by digging tunnels, while soldiers defend it. Alates swarm each spring and perform what is known as a nuptial flight in which they mate in order to form new colonies. If something happens to the king or queen, these pheromones are no longer emitted.<\/p>\n

Termite colonies are highly efficient and typically contain very large numbers of these pests. Since more and more termites<\/a> are produced on a regular basis, it\u2019s important to have pest control handle infestations as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
