Additionally, wood damage isn&#8217;t\u00a0the only indicator. Look for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Damage\u00a0along the wood grain instead of\u00a0across it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Holes and tunnels in the soil or mud in plant boxes or\u00a0near trees, shrubs,\u00a0foundations,\u00a0walls,\u00a0decks, steps and fences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Physical Appearance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Termites live in colonies that have a queen, other reproductives, workers and soldiers. Most termites are about 1\/4\u00a0to 3\/8\u00a0inch long. Look for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Specific castes<\/em> &#8211; Reproductives have thin, uniform-shaped white, cream, pale yellow\/brown or black bodies with or without gray wings. Workers have\u00a0wider, wingless\u00a0white or cream bodies. Soldiers\u00a0have larger\u00a0heads and mandibles than workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ant comparisons<\/em> &#8211; Termites look similar but have wider waists,\u00a0straight antennae and little wing variation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you suspect you have a subterranean termite infestation, never attempt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allisonpest.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/21\/exterminating-nj-termites-is-not-a-do-it-yourself-project\/\">D-I-Y eradication<\/a>.
