They have a smooth, round thorax (the upper body part next to the head) and bent antennae.

Where they nest: Anywhere with moisture and protection. They often nest in wood structures but can also be found in insulation, bathroom tiles, and throughout the home.

The damage they cause: Carpenter ants chew up wood but do not eat it. Their wood destruction consists of long, thin grooves — as if someone carved neat lines and brushed away the sawdust.

When they invade: New Jersey carpenter ants settle into homes during the spring. However, they may invade anytime to search for food.

What they eat: Meat and sugar attract carpenter ants. Seal up pet food and keep syrup, honey, and candies stored away neatly. They also eat syrupy secretions from aphids, so gardens can be sources of food.

The sophisticated nesting habits of carpenter ants make them very difficult for homeowners to treat without the help of professional exterminators.
