Results of a new study was recently presented to the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene\u2019s 60th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia by evolutionary biologists from North Carolina State University according to a report from BBC NEWS Science & Environment on December 12, 2011.\u00a0 In the study, researchers suggest that insecticide use in the tropics is the blame for the recent re-emergence of bed bug infestations throughout the United States and Canada.\u00a0 The researchers studied bed bugs samples that were collected from different states.\u00a0 Of those, \u201c90% of 66 populations sampled from 21 US states were resistant to a group of insecticides, known as pyrethroids, commonly used to kill unwanted bugs and flies.\u201d<\/p>\n

According their study, the bed bugs that were collected were genetically diverse and not interbred. The researchers believe that the genetic evidence that was collected from the bed bugs in Canada and the United States in the past 10 years reveals that the bed bugs were imported bed bugs.\u00a0 They believe that bed bugs have become resistant to insecticides from the tropics because of the exposure that the bugs have endured over extended periods of time to bed linens and bed nets.\u00a0 You may read the article<\/a> here.<\/p>\n
