What Not To Do If You Have Bed Bugs

One of the first things that NJ Pest Control professionals tell homeowners who discover bed bug infestations in their home is “don’t panic.”  Despite the unnerving experience of bed bugs creeping up on you while you are trying to get a good night’s rest, stabbing you with their beaks to receive their blood meal, and then scurrying off to hide like little cowards, NJ Pest Control professionals are certain that bed bug infestations can be overcome.

Here is some useful advice:

• Never use agricultural pesticides indoors to fight bed bug infestations.  Proper insecticides must be used to avoid serious illness.
• To avoid serious illness, never use any insecticides on bedding material.  When a bed bug infestation is present, bedding should be washed and dried on the hottest temperature settings.

• Never use any pesticide or other type of hazardous chemical on your body to kill bed bugs or try to keep them from biting you.  This practice can make you ill or cause death.

• Kerosene, gasoline, and rubbing alcohol usage were used in the past as a means of controlling bed bugs.  This practice is extremely dangerous as these chemicals may cause fires.

• Panicked homeowners often toss out furniture and bedding at the first sight of bed bugs.  The National Pest Management Association does not recommend disposing of furniture.  In most cases, furniture can be properly treated for bed bugs by a licensed pest control expert with experience in bed bug removal services.

• If bed bugs are in your bedroom, don’t move into another room.  Bed bugs can easily travel through the walls and will find you no matter where you sleep.  Moving to another location will spread the bed bug infestation.

The CDC reports a high level of people becoming ill trying to fight bed bug infestations in the United States.  Bed bugs are not a do-it-yourself type of pest.  Hiring a NJ Pest Control expert is the best way to ensure the complete elimination of bloodsucking bed bugs from your home.
