Using Microbes to Fight Mosquitoes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Researchers are looking into ways to use microbes called Wolbachia<\/a> to place limits on mosquito populations. These microbes have the ability to do this naturally, and are able to thrive.<\/p>\n

Wolbachia microbes ensure that higher numbers of non-fertile mosquito eggs are allowed to develop while decreasing the chance that uninfected ones will develop.<\/p>\n

Scientists are testing this pest control method by sending male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia microbes into the local mosquito populations. The mosquitoes will then be monitored to see if the number of eggs does in fact decrease.<\/p>\n
