Subterranean termites and other species keep NJ termite control<\/a> experts busy, but they\u2019re not the only types out there. Scientists have recently found a new termite species in the forests of Colombia.<\/p>\n

First New Discovery in 100 Years<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been more than 100 years since the last termite species was discovered. Now, scientists exploring dry forest regions of Colombia have found a third species that belongs to the termite<\/a> genus Proneotermes. This new species differs in color, shape and genetics compared to its fellow species. Proneotermes macondianus, the new species\u2019 name, comes from a fictional town featured in the novel \u201c100 Years of Solitude\u201d by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Soldier termites that belong to this species range from black to orange and have rectangular heads that are elongated.<\/p>\n

This new species isn\u2019t considered a pest, since it only lives in the wild instead of invading residential or commercial buildings.
