We see them all the time scurrying back and forth, hither and yon, in what looks like a never ending adventure of exploration for food and shelter. These fast moving tiny wonders that never seem to sleep or run out of energy are ants<\/a> who are part of our everyday life.<\/p>\n

There are over 700 types of the pesky species and chances are, at least one or more of the ant types is interested in becoming houseguests. While ants are interesting to observe, you don’t want them setting up housekeeping.<\/p>\n

We’re all familiar with the tiny red ant but if you’re seeing large red and black ants about one inch in length, you’re dealing with carpenter ants<\/a>. The name “carpenter” is fitting because wood is number one on their top 10 list of favorite things.<\/p>\n

Whether it’s fallen tree limbs, wooden fence beams, or wood used flooring, rafters, and foundation for your home, carpenter ants will treat the item as their own creating extensive colonies.<\/p>\n

Carpenter ants aggressively tunnel through wood when creating areas to available food sources and to build nests for the Queen to lay her eggs. They do not eat wood, they just destroy it.<\/p>\n
