Recent infestations in New York City subway trains have shown that a facility doesn’t actually have to have beds to fall victim to bed bugs. Earlier this year bed bugs\u00a0turned up in a Florida library<\/a>, showing that no public place is immune.<\/p>\n

In January, a patron of the Cocoa Beach Public Library spotted an insect in a study area that was subsequently identified as a bed bug. Director Ray Dickinson then closed the library for three days and brought in a pest-control team to perform a thorough extermination.<\/p>\n

The team conducted an initial treatment, then returned twice more for follow-up treatments. Two chairs believed to be harboring the insects were also discarded. Since that time\u00a0there have been no further bed bug sightings<\/a>, so officials are optimistic that the pests were effectively removed.<\/p>\n

As a precaution, the library has received\u00a0inspections every other week. Dickinson says the Cocoa Beach branch, which receives\u00a0approximately 20,000 visitors per month, is the only one in the 17-branch Brevard County system to report bed bug sightings.<\/p>\n
