{"id":2096,"date":"2013-08-19T05:00:40","date_gmt":"2013-08-19T10:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allisonpest.com\/blog\/?p=2096"},"modified":"2013-08-16T05:33:32","modified_gmt":"2013-08-16T10:33:32","slug":"the-never-ending-battle-with-nj-fleas-part-2-of-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/new.allisonpest.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/19\/the-never-ending-battle-with-nj-fleas-part-2-of-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Never Ending Battle With NJ Fleas Part 2 Of 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing from Friday\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allisonpest.com\/biting-insects\/index.php\">Fleas<\/a> do not fly, but they are excellent jumpers.\u00a0 They are known to jump 13 inches vertically and 7 inches horizontally.\u00a0 Converting that to human terms, it is the equivalent of a human jumping 450 feet horizontally and 250 vertically.\u00a0 Fleas have a limited sense of smell so they must rely on detecting the CO2 of their prey in order to feed.<\/p>\n<p>The flea that is most problematic in the United States is the cat flea.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allisonpest.com\/biting-insects\/index.php\">Cat fleas<\/a> prefer to dine on cats and dogs, but in their absence, they will feed upon other warm blooded animals that cross their pathway, including humans.\u00a0 The goal of a flea is to find a host to receive a blood meal.\u00a0 A flea\u2019s only means of food is blood.<\/p>\n<p>Fleas are adaptable creatures that are able to live without a blood meal for months at a time if need be.\u00a0 This is why people who have returned from holiday are besieged with tiny hungry pests awaiting their arrival back home.<\/p>\n<p>Female fleas must have a blood meal in order to reproduce.\u00a0 Once fed, she will lay up to 500 eggs in her lifespan.\u00a0 Flea larvae can exist for up to a year in its cocoon eating skin cells, debris, and flea droppings.
