For\u00a0most parts of the United States, it has been a strange winter thus far.\u00a0 Many locations that typically are under a deep freeze for what seems like endless \"\"<\/a>months have enjoyed a mild, almost non-existent winter season for 2011-2012.<\/p>\n

The Valley Breeze Newspapers reported on February 28, 2012<\/a> that more insects should be expected this year once springtime sets in.\u00a0 They reported that an entomologist stated that the previous three year acorn production boom came to a screeching decline in 2011.<\/p>\n

Without the proper food sources, squirrels, chipmunks, and other rodents that depend on the nuts will have a difficult time surviving throughout the year.\u00a0 It is expected that without a food source, many will meet their demise.\u00a0 Because there will a lack of squirrels and other rodents to feed upon, it is anticipated that humans and pets will become the target for bloodsucking pests such as ticks.\u00a0 Entomologists also believe that because 2012 will bring about more tick<\/a> bites, 2012 will also bring about\u00a0more cases of Lyme disease.<\/p>\n

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans and pets through the bite of a deer tick, which is otherwise known as the blacklegged tick.\u00a0 Although the bite may be painless the symptoms from Lyme disease are not.\u00a0 Typical symptoms include headache, fatigue, fever, and a bulls-eye skin rash where the tick has delivered its bite.\u00a0 Infection can spread to the nervous system, joints and heart if the disease is left untreated.<\/p>\n
