Five Things to Know About Termites Before Spring

Springtime is typically associated with flowers in bloom and other pleasant things, but it’s also the time that termites emerge. These pests are one of the most common insects that can invade homes as the weather gets warmer. Keep the following information in mind in case you need NJ termite control this spring.

  • Termites swarm during spring. When temperatures hit roughly 70 degrees, termite swarmers emerge from their nests. Groups of swarmers can be very large.
  • Only swarmers have wings. Soldier and worker termites do not have wings and remain in the nest most of the time. Male and female swarmers break their wings off before mating and building a new colony.
  • Termite queens live a long time. In some cases, they can live for at least 30 years or more, although many termites don’t survive the winter in colder climates.
  • Termites build mud tubes. While seeing swarms of termites is a good sign that you might have an infestation, it’s also important to look for mud tubes. Termites build these tubes to get around at ground level.
  • Termites can remain active all year round. Some termites actively forage for food and fix up their nests throughout the year.
