Pantry Pests – Feeding on Your Food Stores

The Indian Meal Moth
Pantry Pests

Ants and gnats aren’t the only insects that are drawn to food supplies. There are several other species, including Indian meal moths and saw-toothed grain beetles, that you might find in your pantry.

Pantry pests typically infest certain kinds of food products, such as grains, dog and cat foods, herbs and spices, dried dairy products and nuts. They make themselves at home, then deposit eggs in or near these products. If you have these moths or beetles in your pantry, you might see them as larvae or adults.

Unfortunately, if you do have them, you’ll need to toss out any food items that they’ve gotten into. While they aren’t known for spreading disease, foods that they’ve been in generally aren’t considered safe to eat.

If you find pantry pests, it’s important to get rid of the items they’ve infested before they can multiply even more. Afterwards, give your pantry a thorough cleaning and make sure all other food items are tightly sealed, so these pests can’t get in. If you’re worried about another infestation, a professional pest control company can take measures to lower this risk. Just don’t spray any pesticides in your pantry, since these can contaminate your food.
