Why Are Mosquitos So Successful?

Spring, summer, and fall bring about many types of pests both big and small. Some are just annoying as they nibble on plant life and make a mess of prized garden areas.  Other types of seasonal insects are annoying and dangerous to deal with such as mosquitos report Monmouth County, NJ exterminators.

Here are some interesting mosquito facts…

North America is host to over 170 species of mosquitoes, many of which have come by accident from other parts of the world.

The average lifespan of an adult male mosquito ranges from 10 to 20 days.  Adult females can live for 3 to 100 days depending on many variables.

In some areas of the United States, humans are always on the menu for hungry mosquitos.  In other areas, mosquitos will bite humans if necessary, but they would prefer to bite birds and other mammals instead. These mosquitos are known for spreading encephalitis to humans if they happen to be infected.

A single female mosquito is able to lay 100 to 300 eggs at one time.  During her lifetime she will typically have between 1,000 to 3,000 offspring.

People are often surprised to learn that mosquitos need very little water to lay their eggs.  Standing water in buckets, clogged gutters, tires, and even tree holes is enough for females to lay a massive amount of eggs.

It only takes 4 to 7 days for mosquitos to reach adulthood.

Mosquitos tend to stick around close to home and live within a mile of where they were born.
