The German Cockroach…A Formidable Pest

Cockroaches are a terrible pest to have within a home or business environment.  During the warmer months, cockroaches typically reproduce at faster rates, but the warmth of human habitats helps the cockroach in their efforts to multiply with ease.  Cockroaches are believed to have inhabited the earth for over 300 million years and are considered to be the most successful group of animals in existence.

The German cockroach is among the most common of the cockroach species that infests apartments, houses, restaurants, hotels and other types of buildings.  German cockroaches are ½ to 5/8 of an inch in length.  These cockroaches have wings, but do not fly.  Their color ranges from tan to light brown and they prefer to live in bathrooms and kitchens as they require a good source of water to survive.

German cockroaches prefer moist environments that have a good deal of warmth.  These scavengers feed upon all types of food sources such as meats, starches, grease, and sweets.  These pests rest and hide during the daytime and are active and forage for food and water at night.  Seeing a cockroach during the daytime hours is a good indication of a bad infestation.  Pesticide application can also drive the German cockroach from its hiding place as it looks for a way to escape the pitfalls of the insecticide.

The German cockroach is a formidable pest to eradicate because of its ability to reproduce in human dwellings at a fast rate.  Female German cockroaches produce more eggs per egg capsule (approximately 48 eggs per capsule) than other species of cockroaches.  When those eggs hatch, they reach sexual maturity faster than other species do as well.  The results are a rapid population growth which can only be controlled with the help of a Monmouth County, NJ pest control professional.
